44. Opelucid City and Gym

Opelucid City

Items: Float Stone, Ring Target, Smoke Ball, Scarlet Hat, Big Bag, Fluffy Beard, Gift Box

As soon as you enter Opelucid City, you'll run into Iris again, who remembers you from Castelia City. She tells you about the Gym Leader, Drayden, and also about Route 9 further west. Then she'll walk off. Alright.
Opelucid's appearance changes drastically depending on whether you're playing Black 2 or White 2; in Black 2, it's a lot more high-tech and dark, while in White 2, it's a lot more rustic and lightly colored.
The Pokemon Center is the first building you'll see in the city. You can buy some very useful variants of Poke Balls from the cashier in the second stand. He'll sellDusk BallsTimer Balls, and Quick Balls for $1000 apiece. These are all pretty handy for varying reasons. Timer Balls are nicer for longer fights, because after 10 turns have elapsed, they have a 4.0x catch rate compared to an ordinary Poke Ball (as opposed to 40 turns in Generation IV games and earlier). Quick Balls have a 4.0x catch rate on the first turn, so you can use them against a variety of things and can often catch them before the first strike has been dealt.
The first house to the north of the Pokemon Center has a guy upstairs who is a bit of a Tympole Maniac. Apparently he wants to see your Tympole, so if you show him one of yours, he'll give you something — though you can't get Tympole just yet, so come back to him later when you do get one.
The house north of that, over by the closed entrance to Route 10, has some children upstairs that will play a game with you. One will say a Pokemon's name, then three others will say either that name or two very similar names, and you need to talk to the one who said the name the first one called. It doesn't seem to have a point in doing this, though.
To the west of that house is another house. Inside is a lady who gives you another Smoke Ball, which lets the holder run away from any wild Pokemon fight, regardless of its Speed.
West of that, you'll find the Opelucid Gym. You can take it on right away if you want, but there's still more to explore in town as well as on Route 9.
The house south of the Gym has a Gentleman inside who will give you Props for your Prop Case(for the Musical) each day that you talk to him. He'll eventually run out after you've talked to him for enough days, but will give you another special Prop on your birthday (according to what you have set on your DS, at least).
Lastly, Drayden's house in the center of town (just to the east of where you're at now, then north) has an Axew running around in the bottom floor. There's a Football player up top who gives you a Float Stone, which halves the weight of the holder, reducing the effectiveness of attacks like Low Kick or Grass Knot against it, but raising the effectiveness of attacks like Heat Crash when used against it. The girl south of him gives you a Ring Target, which makes it so the holder can be hit by attacks it is normally immune to, meaning if you give it to a Ghost-type, Normal- and Fighting-type attacks can hit it. It's not overly useful on its own (obviously), but can be used in some combos here and there.
At this point, you can either go straight for the Opelucid Gym, or you can take a detour ontoRoute 9 to pick up some more items and get in a bit of last-minute training!

As you enter the Gym, Clyde will stop you and give you a Fresh Water. Gee, thanks, buddy. He'll show you that you have to fight using these giant stone dragon things in order to get up to the Gym Leader, and also that Ice- and Dragon-type attacks are effective against Dragon-type Pokemon. Cool. Be sure to refrain from using your Fire-, Water-, Electric-, or Fir- I mean Grass-type attacks against them, though, because they're resistant. Otherwise, pretty much any type of attack that isn't one of those will work well if you don't have Ice- or Dragon-type attacks handy.
Climb onto the dragon and run all the way across it until you reach the tail of the black dragon. You'll fight a Veteran there, and he uses a Fraxure L46. After beating him, walk backwards and then one of the arrows on the white dragon will activate. Step on that arrow and the dragon will rise upwards.
Three arrows now light up; the bottom one takes you back down, while left or right take you to some Trainers you'll have to fight. The one on the left has a Veteran with a Fraxure L45 and aDruddigon L45 on her team. The Druddigon has both Rough Skin and the Rocky Helmet equipped to inflict some massive recoil damage, plus it likes to confuse your Pokemon with Swagger and then use Protect. Very annoying! The Trainer to the right is a Veteran with a Fraxure L45 and a Druddigon L45 as well, although this one has the Sheer Force ability instead, so it won't annoy you quite as much.
You only need to beat one of those two Veterans in order for the Up arrow to light up when you go back to the center, but I recommend beating them both anyway.
Go up to the next level, then you have to fight at least one of two Trainers to move forward. The Veteran on the left uses a Druddigon L44, a Fraxure L44, and an Axew L44 in a Rotation Battle, while the Veteran on the right uses a Druddigon L44 (middle), Axew L44 (left), and a Fraxure L44 (right) in a Triple Battle.
All you need to do now is just go back to the center and step on the Up arrow to climb up and lock heads with Drayden's dragon. Heal up your Pokemon (taking a trip to the Pokemon Center if necessary), then get ready to take on the seventh Gym Leader in the game, Drayden!

HaxorusHaxorus MaleDragonLv. 48
He starts off with his Druddigon to get the fight rolling. This thing has several nasty attacks to hit you with, including Crunch and Revenge for some type coverage. Crunch hits extra hard due to Druddigon's Sheer Force ability, while Revenge makes any Ice-type pay if it doesn't knock out Druddigon in one hit. Its Dragon Tail forces it to strike last (actually, Revenge does, too), but it does decent damage and forces you to switch out afterwards.
His Flygon is the next thing up, and this thing is interesting in the fact that it's a Ground/Dragon-type with Levitate, meaning it is immune to Ground-type attacks (as well as Electric-type attacks, but you weren't going to use those against Drayden's dragons anyway, were you?). It packs Earth Power for doing potentially serious damage, as well as Crunch and Dragon Tail like its predecessor. Rock Slide can also be used to help combat Ice-type Pokemon looking to take advantage of its weakness.
Last comes his Haxorus. This thing is nothing to take lightly, because Haxorus has amazingly high Attack, plus it likes to open with Dragon Dance to boost both its Speed and Attack by one stage. That can quickly turn the fight against you, so try to take it out as quickly as possible! The only Dragon-type attack it uses, though, is Dragon Tail, which strikes last and gives you a chance to hit it regardless of its Speed bonuses, but it may decide to use eitherSlash or Assurance instead.
After beating Drayden, he'll give you the Legend Badge, which ensures traded Pokemon up to level 80 obey you without any hassle. He'll also give you TM82 (Dragon Tail), which, as you might have noticed, strikes last and pushes the foe away, ending a fight against a wild Pokemon or forcing an opposing Trainer to switch out after the damage is done.
There's no shortcut to leave, unfortunately, so you'll have to just keep taking the arrows down.

Opelucid City

Upon leaving the Gym, Drayden will walk outside and then tell you to follow him over to his house. Remember where that is? Yeah, it's the building in the middle of town, over by the Pokemon Center. You'll see him outside of his house anyway, so he shouldn't be too tough to track down. Make sure you heal up your Pokemon first, though!
Inside his house, he'll tell you about the Dragon-type Pokemon Reshiram and Zekrom, but will then tell you about a third one, Kyurem. After some talking, you'll be interrupted by the sound of something rumbling. It's not your stomach, no, it's coming from outside!
Outside, you'll see the huge Plasma Frigate from earlier, except it's FLYING and then suddenly fires ICE CANNONS at you! Whoa! No joke! Every shot freezes a part of Opelucid City, frosting it up pretty good.
Drayden doesn't appreciate that and sends out his Haxorus to try smash the ice, but it fails to work. Shortly afterwards, Zinzolin and two Plasma goons show up and talk a bit about N. They say some stuff and then leave. Drayden then instructs you to explore Opelucid City and track down any of the Team Plasma Grunts around.
Well, better get to work, and hope you like sliding. You can slide out of the ice near Drayden's house by sliding to the right and then down. Over there, you'll find Drayden taking on two Team Plasma Grunts. Ignore the one to the south, then take the one on to the east of the Pokemon Center. He has a Watchog L44 and a Muk L44.
After beating him, slide to the north until you reach the end, then a little west. You'll find another Team Plasma Grunt over by the door to a building. She uses a Golbat L44 and aGarbodor L44. Now go over to the west and then south to find yet another Team Plasma Grunt, this one with a Seviper L44 and a Weezing L44 on his team.
Once you've taken all three out, go back to the Gym in the northwest part of town and get ready to take on Zinzolin!

He's got some frosty Pokemon, but they're also at pretty high levels, too. His Weavile is particularly fast and hits hard, so watch out for it!
After beating him, he'll run off, and then Drayden will appear by you instead. He'll heal up your Pokemon and then briefly walk inside the Gym, giving you a special key item, the DNA Splicers, which he's held onto for awhile and tells you not to lose.
As luck would have it, though, one of the Shadow Triad appears, steals your new item, and talks for a bit before his two buddies show up and then run around through town. Oh man! Looks like there's more Team Plasma hunting for you in store!
Head on south and then all the way to the east to find one of the members Shadow Triad.

His Pokemon are all Dark-type, so Fighting-type attacks are your best bet, since the Pawniardare also part Steel-type.
After beating him, he'll teleport away with the DNA Splicers, leaving Drayden to run over and see if you're alright. Just then, you'll receive a call on the Xtransceiver. It's from Hugh andCheren! They're basically, like, what just happened in Opelucid City?! And it turns out Cheren is nearby and telling you that there was a flying ship spotted near Humilau City. Drayden seems to think you can get there through Undella Town, so after wishing you luck in stopping Team Plasma, he leaves you free to head on over there!
At this point, several routes and areas will have been hit by ice, meaning you may need to slide around and find another way through than the usual way. However you go about it, make your way back to Undella Town!
