12. Castelia City

Castelia City

Whoa, what a big city!
Immediately as you enter, one of the first things you should do is head south onto this little pier thing. Talk to the scientist dude there and he'll ask you which of the elemental monkeys you prefer. Same sort of thing as earlier; the choice you make determines the item you get, but this time evolutionary stones are at stake!

Now, unlike before, it's not like these stones are really useful for anyone else. They only evolve the elemental monkeys, so you should probably just get whatever one suits your monkey. You're free to do whatever, though, but this is definitely where you get one of these three elemental stones, so remember that. Just keep in mind that, if you evolve your monkey, it isn't going to learn any new moves. It's a trade-off for higher stats. You can still teach it TM and HM moves, though, so it's not the end of the world by any means, and they learn their best moves through TMs and HMs!
Ok, so now that you've got your stone, go back to where you were and just head west. You'll spy a Pokemon Center at the base of a pretty big building. Might as well take this moment to go inside and heal your Pokemon, or even just to check out the shop. Inside, there'll be someone in line at the Pokemon Center, and she'll ask you if you know about the Geonet. She'll tell you that it's a good way to track where you are and such, so if you're connected to Wi-Fi, you should enter your position on the Geonet.

Trade and Get Paid!

The man in the black suit in the top-left corner of the Pokemon Center will give you some sweet items if you've traded with a certain amount of people! What kind of stuff do you get? Good stuff, with a coveted Master Ball as his primary reward! This is in addition to the one Master Ball you'll get during the game, so if you're looking for a second, you'll want to trade like crazy!
You can trade with players either in person, over Wi-Fi, or you can even trade via the GTS and have it count.
Here's a list of the items he'll give you based on how many trades you've done:
  • Wide Lens if you've traded with at least 5 people.
  • Everstone if you've traded with at least 10.
  • Zoom Lens if you've traded with at least 20.
  • Choice Scarf if you've traded with at least 30.
  • PP Max if you've traded with at least 40.
  • And, lastly, a Master Ball if you've traded with 50 or more people.
You're limited to receiving one of each item, and if you traded with, say, 12 people before talking to him, he'll give you both of the items.
Yeah, so this city looks pretty big, but there's not really anything you need to worry about on the external outer shell, so to speak, right now. However, there are some buildings around the perimeter of the city that you can enter, so let's go through them one by one, starting from the Pokemon Center and heading perpetually left.

Battle Company

The first building has some Trainers for you to battle in it if you want! There's a dude who goes up the elevator when you first get there, and when you get to the elevator, you can go to either 47F or 55F.
Battle Company 47F
On the 47th Floor, there's a Clerk (Male) with a Timburr L19 ready to play ball. There's a Clerk (Female) with a Herdier L19. Talk to the guy near her and he'll give you 3 Quick Balls, which works extremely well if you toss it during the first 5 turns of the battle. He also gives you 3Timer Balls, which is quite the opposite — the more turns that elapsed in the battle, the better it is (it caps at like 40 turns or something, and even then it is only as effective as a Dusk Ball).
The Scientist on the floor has a Roggenrola L19, although he likes to use an X Sp. Def to raise his Roggenrola's Sp. Def right away. The Clerk (Female) to the left of the Scientist has a PetililL18 and a Cottonee L18. Right by her, you can pick up a Revive, which may be incredibly helpful. Now, over on the right side of the room, there's another Clerk (Male) and he has threeBasculin L17, which are strange Water-types you probably haven't seen yet. They give a ton of EXP, though, so it's well worth it.
After all of that, talk to the Scientist at the end and he'll give you the Scope Lens held item, which raises a Pokemon's critical hit rate when its held. If you've got a Pokemon that isn't holding anything, you might as well give it that for now.
Battle Company 55F
Right south of the elevator door is a Hyper Potion, which is actually way too powerful of a Potion for you to get right now, so don't worry about using it yet. To your left, there's a Clerk (Male) with a Woobat L20. Then there's a Scientist right beneath him with a Munna L20. She'll probably start the fight by using an X Special to boost her Munna's Sp. Atk. At the very bottom of the room, there's a Scientist that has a Sewaddle L20, plus he boosts its critical hit rate right away by using a Dire Hit.
Now there's another Clerk (Male) guarding the boss guy, but he has a different sprite and everything and means a lot more... business. Yeah, had to. Anyway, he uses a Pansear L19, aPansage L19, and a Panpour L19. Last but not least, you'll have to take on the chairman himself, who is a Janitor (for whatever reason). He uses a Trubbish L20, the trashbag looking thing. He also has a Minccino L20. After beating him, you'll win the EXP. Share item, which is invaluable for training up new Pokemon as it splits the EXP you earn with the combatant Pokemon and the bearer of that, even if the bearer didn't fight.
Well, that's great. That Battle Company sure rocked! Make your way down the elevator and let's explore the rest of Castelia City.

Passerby Analytics HQ

You can talk to the scientist guy inside and he'll appoint you as a statistician. You can talk to him to conduct surveys and stuff, which will then send other people's responses to you while you're walking around (as long as all of you have your C-Gear going). There's a lot to it, but it's a pretty nifty thing and a great way to learn about your friends!
As you leave, you'll be stopped and asked to answer a questionaire. This will be broadcast to any fellow statisticians as you're walking by, so answer truthfully. Actually, you can answer up to all 8 of them if you want. These are just some basic stuff, but it's fun thinking that you can pass along all of this information! If you complete all 8, you'll be given a Soda Pop for your troubles.

Castelia City - Pokemon Gym (far left)

Since we're already down on this end, let's check out that alleyway. After all, that is where the Gym is.
So yeah, the Gym is to your right. When you try enter it, Cheren will push you out of the way. Oh, hi, Cheren! Looks like Bianca has had her Munna taken by Team Plasma! After that, Burgh pops out afterwards and offers to help. You need to go to see Bianca at the Prime Pier! However, that's back at the ocean-side, and you've got a lot more to explore of Castelia City!
There's not really much else down this side of town for the time being, so proceed further north to the Central Plaza.

Castelia City - Central Plaza

Further in, you'll find a little fountain area and a Dancer dude. He's looking for some fellow dancers to join his sweet grooves, so say yes to battling him and afterwards you can go look for more (you might have already seen them around town). Watch out, though, because he has a Pansage L21! After you've beaten him, you can track down the other two dancers — one of them is in the Narrow Street and the other is on the Unity Pier.
While you're here, you can buy Fresh Water, Soda Pop, and Lemonade in the vending machines on the northern part of the fountain area. I HIGHLY recommend buying about 10+ Lemonades if you can, because they're extremely cheap yet way more potent than Super Potions are! They are the ones that are $350.
Anyway, there's plenty of other places to explore, so let's head down the narrow alley just to the east of the one we entered from.

Castelia City - Narrow Street (middle left)

Hmmm, looks shady back here, that's for sure. Go in a little bit and you'll find another Dancer. If you've already talked to the one in Central Plaza, he'll fight you with a Panpour L21. He'll head to the plaza after you've beaten him, leaving you with one more to find.
Keep going south and you'll find a Cafe, but go past the dumpsters and you'll find a dude in a black suit that appears out of nowhere...! Yikes! Actually, he just gives you TM70 (Flash), which lowers the accuracy of the target by one stage. Hey, it's sort of helpful, maybe.
Go inside of Cafe Sonata and talk to the person behind the counter and he'll give you some Lemonade. Yum!
After that, you'll be back on the outside of Castelia City again, over by the Battle Company, so just head right and then go in through that next alley.

Castelia City - Mode Street (middle right)

Wow, this street sure is bustling a lot more! Look at those people walk!
The first building on your right seems to be some sort of art gallery. The clown inside will ask to see a certain type of Pokemon each day and will reward you with one of five berries of your choosing of you show him a Pokemon that is at least partially that type.
There's a little ice cream stand where you can buy a Casteliacone for $100 if you wait in line for it, but only on Tuesdays! They're sold out every other day, and they don't even sell them in the winter. These heal your Pokemon's status conditions similarly to a Full Heal, but they're 1/5th the price. Nothing to get too excited over due to the hassle of getting them, but they are still pretty sweet, needless to say.
Guess that's it on that side, so now you'll be back in the fountain area. Well, head over to the right and then you'll be in the big street with tons of busy people!

Castelia City - Castelia Street (far right)

From the top of the area, the first building on the left has someone inside that will give your Pokemon a free massage to increase their happiness. Yeah, just talk to the lady with purple in the lobby of the building and she'll do that once per day.
Take the elevator in the building up to 11F and then talk to the Hiker guy and he'll give youTM44 (Rest), a move which causes the user to sleep for the next two turns, but restores its HP to full. It has its uses, particularly if you juggle TM moves (since that is now an option) and are looking to heal your Pokemon. (Although Potions and Lemonade aren't that expensive in the big picture.)
Ok, the building on the right is the Game Freak building. On the first floor, you'll see see a girl and a guy talking. The girl is reading a story about a mischievous little trickster Pokemon named Zorua and how it is looking for its mother. The guy remains silent, blushing after she calls the Zorua in the story cute. Hmmm, how suspect! She'll show you a picture of a little Zorua, which counts as it being seen in your Pokedex, but will do little more unless you have a certain event Pokemon in your party.

Celebi can befriend Zorua!

Zorua
If you have the special event Celebi that was distributed to Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, and SoulSilver shortly before the release of Black and White, you can use the Pokemon Relocator (read the "Northern Castelia City" part, just ahead) to transfer it to your game. Now, if you bring that Celebi in your party to these people here (and have at least one Poke Ball of any kind and an open spot in your party), you'll reveal one of them to be the wily Dark-type Pokemon Zorua! It will join your party at level 10 and this one will always be male.Pokemon Review: Zorua
On the 22nd Floor of this building, you'll find all of the Game Freak guys, just chilling like they always do in any Pokemon game. Yep, that's where they are this time around. None of them will do anything for you at this point in the game, though, so go ahead and leave after saying hi.
Following the path south will take you right back to where you started in Castelia City, so now I guess go back to the fountain area and then head north.

Northern Castelia City

The building on the left has the Name Rater in it. He's the bald old man, of course, and he'll let you change the nicknames of your Pokemon if you so desire.

Relocation Station!

You normally have to wait until after you've beaten the game before you can transfer Pokemon from your 4th Generation game to Black and White; however, there are several recent event Pokemon that can be transferred as soon as you reach Castelia City, but you have to utilize a special method in order to unlock the ability to transfer them.

Getting the Pokemon Relocator

In the 11th Floor of the building in Northern Castelia City, the one on the right with the Name Rater in it, there's a scientist person up there that has developed a special program to allow the transfer of rare Pokemon. He'll only give it to you if you know the password, though!
He'll ask you for two words to start with. These are words selected from the Pokemon word library thing, initially grouped by their meaning or purpose, but you can tap the "Select" button in the bottom left corner to change it to an alphabetical search, making it much easier to find the words you'll need.
The first two words you need to tell him are:
EVERYONE   HAPPY
Entering these words will cause him to ask for the second password, because all top-secret projects have to have a second password, right? Same process, but new words.
The second set of words you need to tell him are:
SIMPLE   CONNECTION
Voila! He'll be impressed and will then unlock the Pokemon Relocator for you! It will appear on the bottom of your game's main menu screen (Continue, New Game, Mystery Gift, etc.) as "Relocator."
Save your game in order for the option to appear on your main menu! After you've saved, go ahead and reset to get back to the menu screen.

How to Use the Pokemon Relocator

Using the Relocator can be a little tricky, mostly because you need two Nintendo DS systems at your disposal. Hopefully you have a friend's that you can borrow; otherwise, you're out of luck.
On your Pokemon Black or White version, from the main menu, scroll down to the bottom until you see the "Relocator" option. Select that and it will show a screen telling you some stuff about your other version and DS.
Now, using the second DS with Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, or SoulSilverinserted, turn that DS on but do not start up your game! Instead, select "DS Download Play" from your DS's menu screen and then choose "Relocator ID: XXXXX" (where XXXXX is your Trainer ID). Download the software and wait a few seconds for it to connect and download.
The Relocator will then be active and will search the 4th Generation game's BOXES ONLY for any of the following Pokemon:
  • The event Shiny Raikou
  • The event Shiny Entei
  • The event Shiny Suicune
  • The event Celebi
  • The currently unreleased Lock Capsule item in HeartGold or SoulSilver
It will not let you transfer any other Pokemon or items, and those Pokemon must not be in your party (unless you don't want to transfer them).
On the DS with Black or White in it, it will show you how many distribution Pokemon you have and are going to have sent over. Verify that you want to send them ALL over (you must place them in your party in order to avoid sending them over; all held items will be placed in the original version's Bag) and then, just like that, they'll be sent to your Black or White version's PC.
These transfers unlock special events inside of Pokemon Black and White. What do they unlock, you ask?
  • Transferring any of the event Shiny Crown Legendaries (Raikou, Entei, or Suicune) will unlock a special event in the Lostlorn Forest (east of Nimbasa City, on Route 16; requires Strength to get to) that lets you fight against the special Pokemon Zoroark L25. This one is always female.
  • Transferring the event Celebi triggers an event when you take that Celebi to the Game Freak building inside of Castelia City (Castelia Street) and talk to the girl and boy on the first floor. As long as you have space in your party, a spare Poke Ball (any kind), and the Celebi you transferred, you'll find yourself the proud owner of a new Zorua L10. This one is always male.
Keep in mind that these are one-way transfers, so make sure you won't be missing any of those Pokemon on your 4th Generation game, as there's no way to send them back!
The first building on the right is having some sort of international party. Dudes with shades and black suits are blocking the elevator, but if you just answer yes to the guy's question, he'll let you in. So take the elevator upstairs and you'll get a chance to talk to some different people, some of which are speaking in different languages!
Talk with one of the girls in the bottom-right corner of the room and you'll receive TM45 (Attract), which, when used, infatuates a target Pokemon of the opposite gender, causing them to fail to attack 50% of the time. It can be useful sometimes, especially when you know you're facing against Pokemon of a certain gender (like Gym Leaders in a lot of cases).
The second building on the right has a Scientist guy in it that will see how many Pokemon you have seen in your Pokedex. If you've seen at least 20, he'll give you the Eviolite, which raises your Defense and Sp. Def if it's held by a Pokemon that hasn't evolved yet (that is capable of evolution).

Let's explore some piers!

The far left pier (Liberty Pier) doesn't have anything particularly special on it... unless, of course, you've gotten the Liberty Pass item over Mystery Gift.

V for Victini

Victini
If you've received the Liberty Pass via Mystery Gift (on Nintendo Wi-Fi), which was available until April 10th, 2012 (or April 22nd in Europe; or, if you live in Australia, you have to get it at EB Games between March 10th and April 28th), you'll want to go to the western-most pier (the Liberty Pier) and take the boat there to the Liberty Garden. There's a bunch of stuff you need to do there, including some Team Plasma Grunts for you to fight, and at the very end there's a very difficult-to-catch Victini L15 waiting for you.
The middle left pier has the last Dancer you need. He uses — surprise — a Pansear L21 when you fight him. After beating him, and after you've beaten the other two Dancers, go back to the fountain and talk to the middle dancer to receive an Amulet Coin, a really useful hold item that doubles the amount of money you receive after battle as long as the bearer was in the fight at one point. Awesome!
Finally, the pier after that — the middle right one — is the one that you're looking for. After you've met Burgh at the Gym in the western side of town (you need to have done this, so go back and do it now if you're looking to progress), he'll be here at the pier meeting Bianca, as well as Iris from Opelucid City. After some discussion, a Team Plasma goon shows up and then runs off. Iris stays with Bianca as her bodyguard while Burgh runs off after the Plasma dude.
The only other pier remaining, the far right Cruise Ship dock, doesn't have anything of interest until after you've beaten the game, so don't worry about it for now. Instead, make your way back to where the Gym was, on the west side of the city.

Plasma on the West Side

As you approach the west side of the city, you'll see Burgh looking around and then noticing that Team Plasma is stationed down by his Gym! Of all the nerve! So go ahead and help him vanquish some Team Plasma goons. The one you have to fight uses two Sandile L17. He's not too tough, don't worry, but watch out for them gators nonetheless.
After beating the trio of Grunts (Burgh takes care of the other two), they'll retreat into the building. Bianca and Iris show up afterwards, and then the three enter the building to see what's going on.
Inside, you'll see Ghetsis, two other Plasma Sages, and some more Plasma Grunts. Yikes! After a lengthy discussion, they decide to give Bianca's Munna back to her. Then, just like that, the whole lot of Plasma dudes vanish, leaving only an item behind in their stead. After even more dialogue, Iris gives you a Yache Berry, which is useful if your Pokemon has a weakness to Ice — like a lot of Dragon-types do, for instance. It reduces the first Super Effective Ice-type hit to only half the damage (making it normal damage unless they're 4x weak), but it's consumed after use, so you don't want to just use it right away.
Anyway, then Iris and Bianca, the two new best friends, will leave, leaving Burgh to do the manly thing and go take care of his Gym. Oh, but before you leave, be sure to pick up theSmoke Ball, which, when held by a Pokemon, allows it to run from any wild Pokemon fight, regardless of its Speed stat. That can be very handy on a lot of things, trust me.
Ok! You're finally ready to take on the Gym! Heal up your Pokemon if you need to, then head back to this area of town with your team ready to go. Remember, the Gym's theme is Bug-type Pokemon, so you'll want a solid Flying- or Fire-type to take 'em on! (Rock-types work, too, but the Gym Leader's prime Pokemon will make short work of it!)

Castelia Gym

Clyde won't pester you like before unless you talk to him, but if you do, he'll still give you some free Fresh Water. Doesn't go quite as far as it used to these days, but hey, it's still nice.
Getting through the Gym isn't terribly difficult, don't worry. Just follow these instructions...
  • Walk forward into the middle of the honey wall as hard as you can until you pass through it, then hit the switch right there.
  • Head into the room and fight the Harlequin with his Sewaddle L20 and Venipede L20.
  • Press the switch to lower the gate around the honey.
  • Walk through the honey, but don't press the switch in front of you unless you want to fight a Harlequin with a Sewaddle L20 and an Dwebble L20 (which is a new hermit crab sort of Pokemon). Despite Dwebble's looks, it is a Bug/Rock-type Pokemon, so Water-type attacks are effective against it.
  • Hit the switch to the northeast of the gate you just went through.
  • Now hit the switch to the northwest of that gate you just went through. That will lower the gate on the honey by the Harlequin.
  • Also, go over and hit the other switch farther west to lower the gate around some other honey for later on.
  • Walk through the honey directly above where the Harlequin was (or would be if you didn't hit that switch), which was north of where you entered this section.
  • Go to the western part again and walk through the honey.
  • Don't hit that switch unless you want to fight another Harlequin. This one has a Sewaddle L21.
  • Now walk through the honey and hit the switch past it. That will open up the gate to its northeast, so walk back over there and go through that honey.
  • You'll need to fight another Harlequin. This one has a Venipede L20 and Sewaddle L20.
  • Hit that last switch, and the gate around the last honey will open, allowing you access to the Gym Leader, Burgh.

Burgh's Bug-type Pokemon are fairly diverse in their types. He's also the first Gym Leader to have 3 Pokemon in his team so far, so that alone will prove to be somewhat challenging. Thankfully, his levels aren't too drastically high compared to what you've been fighting, although his attacks are pretty solid.
His Whirlipede is quite a defensive Pokemon. It will soften your Pokemon up with stat lowering moves before striking hard. The Dwebble is a little difficult with its typing, but it is weak to Water-type attacks, so try to utilize those if you have them in your arsenal. If you don't, just slug it with neutral attacks and hope for the best.
Leavanny is the main attacker on Burgh's team. It is quick, nimble, and hits pretty hard. Razor Leaf punishes any Rock-types that try to take it down, so be on guard for that! It is very weak to Fire- or Flying-type attacks, though, so if you have any, you'll be in business. Bug- or Rock-type attacks will also do a good amount of damage. Just beware, because Burgh is capable of healing if his Pokemon get into the red zone HP wise.
If you're having a lot of trouble with Burgh, you can go to Route 4 to the north a little early (you won't get far in it) and catch a Darumaka. Its Fire Fang will tear Burgh's Leavanny to shreds!
After beating Burgh, you'll be rewarded with the Insect Badge, which enables all traded Pokemon up to level 40 to obey you. He also gives you TM76 (Struggle Bug), which hits for a small amount of damage, but it always lowers the target's Sp. Atk.
As you leave the Gym, Bianca will call you on the Xtransceiver and say she wants to battle you after getting some tips from Iris! Go ahead and take her up on her challenge, but be sure to stop by the Pokemon Center to heal up your weary Pokemon first!
