Nacrene City
As soon as you enter Nacrene City, Cheren will direct you right on over to the Pokemon Center. What, does he think you're gonna get lost in here or something? Well, possibly. Regardless, he tells you that the Gym Leader uses Normal-type Pokemon and he also gives you 3 Chesto Berries to wake up your sleeping Pokemon. You know, just in case. These will come in handy against the Gym Leader, and you can either have them held by your Pokemon or use them as the equivalent of Awakenings. Your call!
Now go heal up your Pokemon and get exploring town! There's plenty for you to do here!
Trade for a flower of a different sort!
From the entrance of Nacrene City, head west down the tracks until you see the first house with stairs leading up. Enter the building from the side (you can actually enter it from the front, too, if you'd like) and talk to the girl up there to trade your Cottonee for a Petilil in Pokemon Black, or a Petilil for a Cottonee in Pokemon White. You're trading one version exclusive for the other one that you can't normally get, so it's a pretty good deal!
You won't be able to get either the Cottonee or Petilil you need just yet, but be sure to return here after getting one in the heart of Pinwheel Forest after getting the Basic Badge.
You can buy any of the X items, such as X Attack, X Defend, X Special, etc. from a guy inside of the bottom floor of the house to the west of the Pokemon Center. These come in handy during any Boss Battle that you're struggling with and I highly recommend having plenty on hand at all times, although since money might be a little tight this early in the game, don't buy too much right away. A few of each, particularly the defensive ones and the attacking ones, can make a world of difference and can help turn fights around for you. You definitely don't want to be without those!
To the west of that building, the lady in the blue hair will give you a special held item that powers up a Pokemon's moves of a certain type depending on what starter you said you started with (you don't have to be honest). She'll ask you to choose between the following answers...
You don't have to pick the same one as your starter, but it will certainly soup up their attacks if you give it to them. The elemental monkeys also benefit from the item, so if you have the Grass-type monkey, Pansage, and want it to do more damage, you can pick Snivy from the answers to get a Miracle Seed. Whatever the case, it adds +20% damage to the corresponding type's moves. Keep in mind that you get a Miracle Seed inside of the Pinwheel Forest after getting your Basic Badge, so if you started with Snivy, you might want to say you started with Oshawott if you're using your Panpour to get both items (although you don't get that +20% damage against the Gym Leader...).
When you approach the Gym, you'll be stopped by N, who already showed up there and is now itching for a battle against you. He'll ask you a question, but I don't think it's overly important. Just go ahead and stomp his face in!
He's not too challenging, but he uses a few Pokemon you probably haven't seen before, such as Tympole and Timburr. Be wary around them, particularly Timburr, who can hit hard if you're not prepared. After beating him, he'll run off, but will say something about wanting Zekrom (orReshiram if you're playing White), saying that he wants to be the hero with Zekrom or Reshiram (depending on your version). Weird!
Now, before taking on the Gym, there's something that may help your fight... Not only that, but you can have a chance to catch the Pokemon that N had, too. Head off to the west, over to Pinwheel Forest.
Pinwheel Forest
Right near the start of the route, talk to the lady standing at the edge of the path and she'll give you TM94 (Rock Smash). That will definitely come in handy in your fight against the upcoming Normal-type Gym, that's for sure! Since it is no longer an HM move, you can replace it whenever you want, meaning it doesn't hurt at all if you teach it to your Pokemon for right now. Pokemon like Lillipup or Roggenrola, or even your starter will definitely benefit from having it.
Keep going down the path if you'd like. There's a Nurse you can battle who has a Munna L15, which may prove rather challenging for you due to its level. However, after beating her, she'll heal up your Pokemon. You can also talk to her at any point to have her heal your Pokemon, which saves you a few steps heading back to the Pokemon Center.

Version Differences!
Throughout Pokemon Black and White, you'll sometimes be able to find only certain Pokemon in one version and not in the other. Sometimes, you'll be able to find both in either version, but one is rarer or harder to come by than the other. In the table above, you'll see Sawk and Throh with different rarities depending on the version that's being played. "B" stands for Black while "W" stands for White. However, pay close attention to the "Rustling Grass / Dust Cloud" table — you can find the rarer of the two Fighting-type Pokemon only in the rustling grass!
Past the Nurse, there are a few Preschoolers that you can fight. There's also an Ether that can be reached by going inside of the gate near the Nurse. Anyway, back to the Preschoolers. One of them has a Cottonee L13 and a Petilil L13 while the other has a Roggenrola L14. Then, past the Preschoolers you'll find another Great Ball. Great.
Keep going south and you'll find even more tall grass, as well as a Youngster down there with some interesting Pokemon ready to battle. He has three Tympole at L13. Tympole is an odd little Water-type Pokemon, so be wary. Past him you can find an Antidote, then another Youngster to the east while some thick grass is over to the west. There's a Super Potion in the southeast corner of the thick grass, but that's about it, other than the Pokemon there. The second Youngster nearby has a Venipede L14, which is a big Bug-type Pokemon similar to Weedle back in the day, and he also has a Lillipup L14.
Head to the east and climb up those steps and you'll find a Black Belt and Battle Girl waiting up there. They each have a Timburr L16, which is a rather powerful Fighting-type Pokemon. Head down the steps by the Black Belt and you'll reach the Net Ball that was waiting up on that ledge. Yeah, really exciting. Ah well, hop off the ledge and then head west to the previous area, where you can either head back or go fight around in the thick grass in search of some rare Pokemon.
Fighting Stars!
Once a day, if you have a Fighting-type Pokemon in your team, you can examine the big rock near the Black Belt and Battle Girl. You'll be able to smash part of the rock and break off aStar Piece, which can be sold for a respectable $4900. (Or you can sell them to the rare item collector in Icirrus City for a whopping $9800!)
Since the path into Pinwheel Forest is blocked off by Team Plasma for now, it's a good time for you to return to the Gym and get your 2nd Badge, now that you have all of this extra training under your belt!
Nacrene Gym
When you first enter the Gym, you'll wonder if you stepped into the right place, because it appears to be a museum. There's a giant fossil of some massive Dragon-type Pokemon, as well as a few other Pokemon here. But the assistant director, Hawes, will lead you to a door taking you to the actual Gym, so don't worry. It turns out the Gym Leader, Lenora, is his wife!
Upon entering the Gym portion of the building, Clyde will give you another Fresh Water and will tell you a bit about the Gym and stuff. Ah, but that's what you have me for, right?
Anyway, the first Trainer you run into has a Patrat L17.
In order to get the rest of the Trainers to fight you, you're going to need to solve some puzzles. These puzzles are based on notes hidden inside of books and following clues around. It's not overly difficult, but you can also just follow these directions to get through:
- Go to the bottom-left bookshelf and press A when looking at the blue bookshelf down there. You'll want to pick up the book there entitled "Nice to Meet You, Pokemon!"
- Inside of the book will be a clue from Lenora, asking you what the first Pokemon you fought in the gym was and that you should go to the middle row. Go there, then on the left side, search the green bookshelf. There's another clue in the book entitled "The Biology of Patrat."
- The next book describes a fiery Pokemon with smoke all around it, hinting that someone is reading it. Go talk to the Scientist up in the back of the room and say that is the book you're looking for (even though the subject isn't a Pokemon like you probably thought). She'll battle you right away, using a Herdier L17 (evolution of Lillipup). Watch out! She may use an X Defend right away!
- After beating her, she'll move out of the way.
- Search that bookshelf and you'll find another secret memo with a question.
- Now go search the green bottom-right bookshelf and you'll find yet another memo with a clue inside. It describes some directions, but you'll just want to head directly north of where you're at and battle the School Kid on the steps. She has three Lillipup at level 15 and is not too difficult to defeat.
- After beating her, search the bookshelf she was guarding and answer yes to reveal a secret set of stairs leading down to the Gym Leader!
You might want to take this moment to go back and heal. Stock up on items if you need, then go back, save your game, and get ready to take on the Gym Leader herself, Lenora!

Lenora is a very tough Gym Leader due to her Pokemon's high levels and powerful attacks. She starts off with her Herdier, which has Intimidate to lower your lead Pokemon's Attack stat. Either make sure you're leading with something that uses Special-based attacks, or something to absorb the stat change and that you'll let Herdier take out (so the Pokemon you send in doesn't have its Attack lowered). Herdier can use Bite, Take Down, and Leer. Take Down will hit for a LOT of damage, unless you're absorbing the hit with a solid Rock-type like Roggenrola. Be wary of that! However, Take Down will also hit Herdier for recoil damage, so it comes at a cost that you can take advantage of.
Her Watchog is particularly annoying. It may use Retaliate as soon as you knock out Herdier, which does double the damage if used on the turn after Herdier is knocked out, so your best bet is to switch to a Pokemon to absorb the blow — something like a Roggenrola works nicely, because it has Sturdy and won't be knocked out, allowing you to pull off a Sand-Attack to lower her Watchog's accuracy. Doing that can make a huge difference! It also has Hypnosis to try put you to sleep with! If it hits, you can administer either an Awakening or one of the Chesto Berries you got from Cheren; if you were holding a Chesto Berry, it will wake up immediately.
Some of the Fighting-type Pokemon you can catch in the outskirts of the Pinwheel Forest work great at taking down her Normal-type Pokemon, but if you don't feel like using any of them, at least try make use of TM94's Rock Smash (also picked up in the outskirts of the forest) to exploit her Fighting-type weakness and hopefully lower her defenses.
After beating Lenora, she'll give you the Basic Badge, which makes traded Pokemon up to level 30 obey you without question. She also gives you TM67 (Retaliate).
Before you have much time to celebrate, Hawes barges in, saying that Team Plasma is here and after some of the bones from the museum! Head back upstairs and you'll see a bunch of Team Plasma dudes there. They run off with a big chunk of the big dragon fossil you saw earlier! Yikes!
Outside of the Gym, a mysterious person comes over and knows Lenora pretty well. Lenora introduces him as Burgh, the Gym Leader from Castelia City. They're sort of talking about Team Plasma and some stuff, then Bianca and Cheren show up. Lenora leaves to go find Team Plasma while Burgh heads towards the Pinwheel Forest. Then, Bianca gives you the Dowsing Machine (Dowsing MCHN in game, but they still refer to it as the Dowsing Machine) and Cheren shows up shortly afterwards, both heading to the museum afterwards.
You can use the Dowsing Machine to search for hidden items! That's pretty useful, that's for sure. Unlike the Gen IV games, where it was more radar-like, this one is a lot more like a real Dowsing Machine. It'll have two sticks held apart, but basically it will guide you in the direction you need to go. Just remember that when you're on top of the item, you have to actually face it in order to pick it up, so take a step back and then press A in order to pick up your prize.
There's actually an Ultra Ball hidden on the patio of the Cafe in the northwest part of town, so you might as well pick it up on your way to the Pinwheel Forest (after healing, of course).
